While Christmas decorations can make homes look pleasantly festive, they can leave behind a sticky mess if you don't remove them properly.

Now, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch have shared how to remove sticky residue from windows and other surfaces using a simple household item.

It comes after Facebook user Sue Roberts asked the social media group, 'Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips': "Hi folks, [I] had sellotape on my window. When taken off, it's left sticky residue on bits of the window. What's the best thing to remove it without scratching the glass? Many thanks."

The post was inundated with more than 260 comments from fellow cleaning enthusiasts, with the most suggested solution being WD40.

Kennedy LA said: "WD40. Spray a little onto sellotape residue, leave for 10 minutes, it should rub off using a soft cloth. For stubborn areas, repeat the process."

Kathleennancy Gallagher commented: "WD40 will remove all sticky residue."

Carmel Gardiner said: "WD40 - great for everything."

WD40 can be bought for £2.99 from Home Bargains, £6.98 from Toolstation and £5.50 from Sainsbury's.

WD40 is a water displacement spray that contains a blend of lubricants and anti-corrosion properties.

The product can be used to lubricate moving parts, prevent rust and remove grease, grime and mud from surfaces.

Other suggestions from Mrs Hinch fans included using hand sanitiser, mayonnaise and nail polish remover.

Nicky Ciku said: "I use hand sanitiser and leave it 10 minutes and then wipe off with a dish cloth."

Emma Scowen commented: "Mayonnaise. Put a layer over the sticky patch. Leave for 10 minutes. Wipes straight off."
