Sky Sports forced to apologise as Van Gerwen reacts after making World Championship final | Other | Sport

Sky Sports were forced to apologise to viewers after Michael van Gerwen blurted out a swear word following his triumph over Chris Dobey at the World Darts Championship.

The Dutchman cruised into the final in style, only dropping a single set on his way to a one-sided victory. He will face either Luke Littler or Stephen Bunting on Friday night as he looks to win his first World Darts Championship title in six years.

Van Gerwen was clearly fired up after beating Dobey, having clocked an average of 98.84 and hitting 43 per cent of his doubles along the way.

In his post-match interview live on Sky Sports, he was asked if securing world domination for the fourth time would be the highlight of his career.

He bluntly replied: "That's something to worry about tomorrow. I don't care. I'm in the final. I've won f**k all yet so I'll try and do it tomorrow."

Sky Sports reporter Abigail Davies was quick to address Van Gerwen's slip of the tongue, saying: "I will have to apologise for that language there."

Mighty Mike was also quizzed on his immediate thoughts after brushing Dobey aside to reach the final without really getting out of second gear.

"A 99 average is not that bad," he said. "I'm happy with the performance. I wasn't playing as explosive as the last game but I was efficient.

"When I had to do things, I did it at the right moment and that's what you have to do to win games. You always have ups and downs but today I had the right mentality. Even when things didn't go my way, I produced good stuff at the right moments."

Van Gerwen made it clear that he was not getting ahead of himself despite reaching the final, adding: "We are still so far away. I still have to battle. Tomorrow is another day and the title is far away. That's what you have to keep telling yourself.

"I don't want to make mistakes. I want to keep it that way. I love performing on the stage. It's my passion, it's my life. Of course, I have a family now but it is what it is. I enjoyed it tonight."
