Four important January gardening jobs you can’t ignore for luscious spring bloomsIt’s finally a new year, which means spring is on the horizon, with days gradually getting longer. Planning now can help to encourage a thriving garden, according to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). The pros recommended putting some food out for the birds as well as leaving some garden areas uncut for a little longer. This will help to provide shelter for wildlife in the garden whilst the weather is still cold. As well as this, the experts have urged gardeners to complete various jobs, including these four important tasks. 1. Pruning apple and pear treesThe experts said: “Pruning an apple or pear tree can be daunting for many gardeners. “Aim to take off between 10 and 20 percent of the overall canopy in any one winter. “Work around the tree evenly and keep an eye on your pruning pile, if it’s looking a little big, stop.” 2. Clean pots and greenhousesCleaning greenhouses, whether glass or plastic can help to improve the growing environment for plants. The experts recommended removing algae, moss and grime to help let in more light. Letting in more light and cleaning can also help to prevent pests and diseases. 3. Keep an eye on watering houseplantsIndoor heating is very drying on houseplants, so it’s important to check them regularly to make sure they are kept just moist. The gardening pros urged houseplant owners not to let the houseplants dry out as they could begin to wilt. 4. Plant now to boost the winter fragrance in your gardenFragrant plants can add lots of dimension to the garden and are ideal for smaller gardens. The experts recommended planting acacia dealbata as a winter-flowering plant, azaleas and magnolias for spring flowering and buddleia for summer flowering. Make sure to place them in a sheltered area where the scent can be contained. Source link Posted: 2025-01-01 07:23:33 |
