Fixing a blocked drain might be easier than you think, and there's no need to dial up the experts just yet. 

A spokesperson from My Plumber has shared their “most effective” tricks for cleaning that stubborn clog without reaching for the plunger or shelling out loads of cash.

They explained: “A blocked bathroom or kitchen sink is an eventuality we all dread and never a pleasant experience.

“Weird smells, strange gurgling sounds, or slow draining water is your sink’s way of telling you to get the clog taken care of soon.

“In most cases, you can find out how to unblock a sink yourself using one of a few different methods before turning to outside help.”

In place of white vinegar and baking soda, soda crystals have been hailed as a multi-purpose cleaner that can “work wonders” on a clogged sink, per expert advice.

What makes soda crystals a great choice for this job, is that soda crystals have detergent properties, which help tackle dirt and grease.

It’s these grease-fighting properties that make it great at dealing with fat-clogged drains.

The suggested method for using them involves initially pouring boiling water down the drain, followed by a cup of soda crystals into the plughole, topped with another cup of hot water. 

After waiting five minutes, pouring another full kettle of hot water is recommended to flush the system thoroughly.

Additionally, the specialist claimed washing powder can be an “effective” agent for combating blocked sinks.

The guidance provided for this technique is to add two tablespoons of biological washing powder down the drain and chase it with hot water. 

Depending on the severity of the blockage, this process may require several repetitions.

And for those struggling with particularly stubborn clogs, the professionals swear by a drain snake - touted as the "the secret weapon for homeowners and plumbers to clear stubborn pipe blockages”.

For those without a drain snake, the plumbing expert recommended a “quick DIY alternative” using a straightened wire coat hanger or net curtain wire to unblock and clean it.
