The £2 quick fix for major car issue which could fail an MOT test

Motorists can fix damaged windscreen wipers and potentially avoid MOT test failure for just £2 this December.

Ben Pitcher, spokesperson for DPF Experts, suggested buying wiper blades and installing them at home may save road users a fortune on installation costs.

Windscreen wipers are one of the most vital parts and are responsible for motorists' vision on the roads.

Fixing new wiper blades can be a quick and simple process which almost everyone should be able to do in minutes.

Ben said not updating blades was one of the “lesser known mistakes” drivers tend to make over the winter.

Ben explained: “Winter weather puts an extra strain on wipers, with heavy rain, ice, and snow testing their durability.

“Investing in wiper blades designed for these conditions can improve your safety during harsher months.

“Garages may charge up to £50 for a replacement and fitting, but it’s possible to do it yourself for as little as £2 by buying the right blades and following simple instructions.

“Most modern wiper blades are designed for easy installation, simply press the release button on the existing blade to remove it, align the new blade with the arm, and click it into place.”

According to recent data, over 150,000 MOT failures in 2023 were due to visibility defects.

This included damaged windscreen wipers, suggesting failing to update the tool can have consequences.

Cars will fail the annual check if mechanics believe windscreen wipers do not effectively cover the glass.

Specialists point out that there are some key warning signs motorists should look out for to quickly identify if their windscreen blades are broken.

Ben said: “Windscreen wipers typically last between six months and a year, depending on usage and weather conditions.

“Signs like streaking, skipping, or squeaking on the windscreen shouldn’t be ignored, as they indicate your blades may no longer be effective.

“Other signs of a damaged wiper include cracks in the rubber, bent blades, or poor cleaning performance. Looking out for these signs can save you from the inconvenience, cost of fines or MOT failures.”
