How to unblock drains fast with vinegar, baking soda and 1 other natural item

Blocked drains often have homeowners frantically dialling for costly plumbers, while store-bought solutions can be equally pricey and packed with harsh chemicals.

These potent formulas risk damaging pipes in the long run and can threaten the environment when they enter the water system.

However, cleaning professional Clare from Bust The Dust has shared a nifty homemade solution that provides a “quick and affordable fix for stubborn clogs”.

She advised that adding salt into the vinegar and baking soda mix makes it “faster” and claims it to be as effective if not “better” than commercial options.

Her simple DIY unblocker calls for three household staples - baking soda, white vinegar, and salt. Once mixed, these components unleash a mighty reaction tackling the usual culprits behind blockages such as grease, hair, soap scum, and residual food.

To use this method, tip 100g of table salt, 200g of baking soda down the blocked drain and 500ml of white vinegar. Clare promised: “You’ll immediately notice a fizzy reaction as the vinegar reacts with the baking soda to break down debris.”

Once it's been poured down, let it work its magic for about half an hour before rinsing the drain with hot water.

For those particularly stubborn clogs, a repeat performance might be necessary to ensure total clearance.

So, how does this DIY solution work? It's all about the chemical reaction between vinegar (an acid) and baking soda (a base). The fizzing action that occurs when these two combine helps break down the fats and grease that can cause pipe blockages.

The salt adds an extra cleaning punch, helping to scrub away any stubborn grime.

This is a natural process, so no harsh chemicals are involved - making it a safer choice for your home and the environment.

Clare explained: "What’s great about this method is that it’s so simple but it is also really effective.

“The natural ingredients break down organic materials like hair and food waste that are often responsible for blockages, and because it's non-toxic, there's no risk to your pipes, pets, or family.”

For optimal results, Clare suggests using this solution as soon as the water drains slowly. She stated: “If you catch the blockage early, this homemade recipe is usually all you need to get your pipes flowing freely again.”
