Tom Voyce feared dead at 43 as ex-England star's car found in river | Rugby | SportFormer England rugby star, Tom Voyce, 43, is feared to have tragically died after his car plunged into the River Aln on Sunday, according to Northumbria Police. The force issued a statement on Tuesday evening stating: "We are searching for a man believed to have gone into the River Aln near Alnwick. "Extensive enquiries have been ongoing since we received a report on Sunday that former England rugby international player Tom Voyce, 43, had not returned home after being out with friends the previous evening." A post on X from the England team's account read: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Tom Voyce at this extremely challenging time." Gloucester posted that they were "desperately sad to hear the distressing news regarding our former player and friend" and added: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Tom’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time." It's suspected that Tom attempted to cross Abberwick Ford in his car which was then swept away by the river's current. His car has since been recovered, but there is still no sign of Tom. It's feared that he may have been swept away and tragically drowned while trying to escape. The incident occurred during Storm Darragh, which brought severe weather conditions to the UK over the weekend, leading to numerous flood warnings. Specialist officers from Northumbria Police's Marine Section, the National Police Air Service, drones and dog handlers, along with volunteers from the North of Tyne Mountain Rescue and Voyce's family and friends, have been involved in the search. Chief Superintendent Helena Barron of Northumbria Police said: "This is an extremely tragic incident, and our thoughts are very much with Tom's loved ones at this time," adding that their officers continue to support his family and requested that their privacy be respected. "Extensive inquiries have been ongoing since concerns were raised for Tom, including deploying specialist teams to search for him." Voyce hails from Cornwall but has resided in Alnwick since 2020. Representing England between 2001 and 2006, he earned nine caps before hanging up his boots in 2013. He showcased his talent as either a winger or full-back, playing for major clubs like Bath, Gloucester, Wasps, and London Welsh during an illustrious career. Post-retirement, Voyce took up a position at Investec Bank. Source link Posted: 2024-12-10 19:25:14 |
