Syria: Chaos in Damascus as rebels set fire to buildings and loot bank | World | News

The Syrian capital of Damascus is in a state of chaos after rebels took control of the city and brought down President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Video footage shared on social media purportedly shows Syrians looting the country's central bank.

People were seen leaving the bank holding big bags with what appeared to be cash inside.

Pictures also show the Syrian Immigration and Passports Department building up in flames.

Unconfirmed images show a building up in flames. The news comes amid speculation that Bashar al-Assad's plane may have been shot down. This has not been confirmed.

Footage has also shown Syrians breaking into Assad's presidential palace, destroying some of the rooms and taking selfies as they made their way around the luxury complex.

One video showed a garage filled with sportscars, including Ferraris, Aston Martins, and a Bugatti Veyron.

Syrian rebels said on Sunday that Assad has fled the country. His plane disappeared from radars, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Assad succeeded his father as president back in 2000. Like his father, he oversaw a period of oppression and brutality, culminating in the Arab Spring protests of 2011.

This commenced the Syrian civil war after Assad brutally clamped down on opposition with the help of Russia and the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah.

More than half a million people were killed during the five-year war, while six million others became refugees.

The downfall of Assad marks the end of his family's rule in Damascus, which had lasted for over 50 years.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an Islamist militant group, led the Syrian rebels.

The group has links to Al-Qaeda and Islamic State. Their leader is Abu Mohammed al-Julani.

Syrians around the world are celebrating the fall of Assad's regime, while international leaders are already contacting the rebels as they take control of the country.
