As Christmas approaches experts are advising homeowners to take precautions to protect their properties from a seasonal increase in burglaries.

According to the Office for National Statistics, there were 181,617 home burglaries reported in England and Wales already this year, which is an average of 498 burglaries per day.

To keep your home safe if you are on holiday over Christmas, or even just enjoying a couple of hours away from home, Cinch Home Services has shared some simply security changes that should me made this month.

According to data shared by Cinch, the most dangerous locations in the UK are Hackney, Middlesborough and Leeds, and the county with the highest reports is South Yorkshire.

But no matter where you live, the experts most important recommendation is to ensure that your home is never left looking empty.

Use night lights and timers

By using night lights and timer-controlled lighting throughout your home can create the illusion that someone is at home, even when you're not. This simple tactic helps discourage burglars by making it harder to tell if the house is empty.

The expert explain: "Set your lights to turn on in different rooms at varying times to mimic typical household activity. If you have smart home technology, you can use an app to control the lights remotely, adding another layer of realism by changing the lighting schedule."

Ensure windows are covered

It is equally important to ensure that there is nothing on display that could attract the attention of unwanted visitors.

The experts said: “To reduce the temptation for break-ins, keep valuables like electronics, jewelry, or wrapped holiday presents out of view from windows. Close curtains or blinds before you leave, especially in rooms where expensive items might be visible”

They also recommend that householders avoid leaving items like bikes or tools in plain sight outside, as they could attract opportunistic thieves as well.

Install a security systems

Using cameras, motion sensors and alarms can be a highly effective deterrent against break-ins. Many modern systems are affordable, easy to install, and allow you to monitor your home remotely via a smartphone app, providing peace of mind even when you're away.

Don’t leave spare keys outside

Hiding spare keys outside is risky as burglars often check common spots. Instead, leave a key with a trusted neighbour or use a secure key lockbox to make access more difficult for intruders.
