Man Utd staff member dies as Bruno Fernandes leads emotional tributes for popular figure | Football | Sport

Bruno Fernandes has led the emotional tributes after Manchester United announced the sad passing of legendary club receptionist Kath Phipps. On Thursday, United confirmed that Phipps had died at the age of 85 following an incredible 55 years of service since the late 1960s.

The Irlam-born figure was beloved by all who had the pleasure of meeting and interacting with her across the six decades in which she fulfilled a variety of roles.

Phipps started as United's switchboard operator in September 1968, striking relationships with Sir Matt Busby, Jimmy Murphy and the club's ultra-talented squad.

She went on to serve as a key fixture in the club's operations, working at Old Trafford's directors' entrance and taking post as training ground receptionist at Carrington.

Phipps enthused positivity and would often be seen in club footage greeting players, coaches and members of the boardroom with warm hugs, accentuating the familial feel of United.

Her impact extended far beyond the walls of United's stadium and training complex.

As Phipps mourned the passing of her husband, Richard, Sir Alex Ferguson took his squad to the funeral to support her through her grief.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, players and staff ensured she had company in lockdown, further highlighting how missed she will be.

In 2022, Phipps received a Service to Football award from the League Managers' Association.

"I just enjoy being here. Not everybody can say they enjoy going to work, but I do. Football has been my life," Phipps said in an interview last year as she commemorated her 55th anniversary at the club.

Fernandes, Wayne Rooney, and Diogo Dalot almost instantly posted their tributes on social media upon the announcement of Phipps' passing.

The United captain reacted to the news with a love heart, while Rooney, the club's former skipper, shared some heartfelt words.

"The heart and soul of @manchesterunited. Everything what the club is about," Rooney wrote on Instagram.

"A legend who will be greatly missed. Thanks for the memories Kathy. Thoughts with family and friends."

On X, Dalot wrote: "We love you Kath. Thank you for showing everyday what this club is about and taking care of us."

McTominay, who spent 22 years at United from the age of five before joining Napoli in the summer, also paid his respects.

"You were loved and adored by everybody Kath. You made me smile each and every time I saw you and could brighten up any room you walked into. Rest in peace," the Scotsman shared.

Meanwhile, Harry Maguire penned: "A legend that will never be forgotten. I will miss you. We will miss you. RIP Kath."
