Eggs stay fresh for ‘up to 12 months’ with ‘straightforward’ storage tipAs one savvy mum discovered, bulk-buying eggs is possible and can save you a significant amount of money. Taking to TikTok to share her wisdom, This Mum Cooks (@thismumcooks ) revealed an “absolute bargain” she found in the supermarket - dozens of eggs. While many people buy eggs in their weekly shop in fear of them going off too quickly, the TikTok content creator has found a way to keep eggs as fresh as they are on the day you buy them. All you need is the freezer. In a video posted on her profile, she said: “If you see reduced eggs like this and you want to buy some but you don’t think you’re going to get through them, you can actually freeze them. “Freezing eggs can be really straightforward but if you want to freeze a whole egg, you’ve got to take it out of the shell.” The bargain hunter suggested: “Mix the eggs together as if you’re going to scramble them, put them in a freezer container and you can pop them straight in the freezer.” There’s no need to freeze the entirety of the egg either, and it makes recipes easier to follow when you’ve got a pre-separated egg on hand. If you want to freeze just the egg whites so they’re separate from the yolks, separate them first and put the whites in one container and the yolks in another. Before freezing the two egg components, another step should be taken to ensure the yolks remain intact. First, scramble the whites in the container and transfer them to a freezer, where “they last about a year”. The TikTok foodie said: “If you want to freeze egg yolks, you want to mix in a bit of salt or sugar, depending on what you want to do with those eggs in the future, because that stops them going like a jelly consistency.” She continued: “Like I say, eggs will last in the freezer for up to 12 months you just want to make sure you defrost them properly before you use them.” This same method can be used to freeze leftover egg whites or yolks, preventing waste in your kitchen ventures. For those insistent on preserving whole eggs, the best way to keep them fresh is more simple than you might think. British Lion Eggs states, “You may have a lovely-looking spiral egg holder or handy egg shelf in your fridge, but the truth is nothing can beat the original carton.” The experts suggest that the box not only protects the eggs but also shows the best-before date, which you can refer to any time you’re unsure. Furthermore, eggshells have tiny pores through which bacteria from other foods and smells, such as food odour and flavouring, can seep through over time, so the carton acts as a barrier to this. As for whether eggs belong in the fridge or not, British Lion Eggs says: “For optimum quality and safety, you want to make sure your eggs are kept at a steady temperature below 20C, so try to avoid moving them too often between very cold and very warm temperatures such as between a hot car and fridge, or fridge and hot kitchen.” Source link Posted: 2024-12-05 12:29:45 |
