Shaun Murphy labelled a liar as Michael van Gerwen mocks snooker star | Other | Sport

Shaun Murphy was labelled a liar after darts legend Michael van Gerwen fired a brutal dig the way of the snooker ace.

The pair both featured at the Paddy Power Perfect Challenge event, which pitted stars from snooker, darts and golf against each other.

Its aim was to discover which achievement out of a snooker 147 break, darts nine-darter and golf hole-in-one was the most difficult to do.

In the end, Murphy was the only sportsman in attendance to complete their respective challenges, having sunk a 147 just minutes after fluffing his lines with five balls to go on a previous attempt.

But it was Murphy’s claims about his darting ability that sparked the biggest reaction of the afternoon, with the 42-year-old insisting he’d hit a nine-darter before.

Michael van Gerwen, who was alongside Luke Humphries as the other darts representative, challenged Murphy to step up to the oche and prove his worth.

Laying down a marker to the three-time world champion, Murphy asked: “What happens if I hit a 180 here?"

To which Humphries replied: "Then we'll believe you [have hit a nine-darter]!"

MVG was next to chime in, saying: "Where was it that you hit the nine-darter? I'd like to know this story. Was it 301 or 101? I'm serious."

A subtle dig, suggesting Murphy’s alleged nine-darter wasn’t actually legitimate.

Unsurprisingly, fans were quick to react to Murphy’s ambitious claim, with many suggesting he’s made it up.

Replying in the YouTube comments, Alfmeister replied: “Ain’t no way he hit a 9”

Twiggy said: “Was he stood 2ft away?”

Y1NIESTA cheekily added: “9 darts starting on 40 maybe.”

But it turned out to be just one flashpoint from a feisty afternoon of cross-sport action, with Murphy and Humphries going head-to-head in a fiery debate earlier on in the day.

Reigning World Darts Champion Humphries claimed a professional in each of the two sports, would find the 147 break the easiest compared to a nine-darter, because snooker players already ‘know the angles’.

Murphy didn’t take well to the claim, responding: “I didn’t know you were a comedian!”

Humphries hit back: “What’s funny about that? Did you hear what I said though?”

“When you know all the angles, in my opinion and you have your own one, when you know all the angles [a 147 is easier],” Humphries said. “You can see, Mark has come close already twice.

“That’s what I mean. I think when you are a professional and you are really good at the game of snooker, you make it look easy a 147.”
