Carlos Alcaraz shows true feelings about Andy Murray joining Novak Djokovic's team | Tennis | Sport

Alcaraz could meet Djokovic in the second round of 2025 Davis Cup qualifying after Spain and Serbia were picked in the same side of the draw.

And discussing the new partnership between Djokovic and Murray ahead of an exhibition match at Madison Square Garden in New York, Alcaraz admitted the 24-time Grand Slam champion has found the “right coach.”

He then joked: “It's like I'm going to play against them [both in the future].” And he added: “It’s going to be incredible for tennis.”

Djokovic became the most decorated men’s player in history last year when he surpassed Rafael Nadal at the top of the all-time Grand Slam leaderboard.

He moved beyond the Spaniard when he defeated Casper Ruud in the French Open final, before moving two titles clear of the former leader by lifting the US Open trophy three months later following victory over Daniil Medvedev in the showpiece match.

But his form has fallen away over the last year and he will end the 2024 season without a Grand Slam trophy for the first time since 2017.

And explaining his decision to appoint Murray as his coach during an appearance at the Qatar Grand Prix last weekend, Djokovic stated: “I was going through a process of thinking about next season over the past couple of months.

“I was figuring out what I need at this stage of my career, because I stopped with my [former] coach Goran Ivanisevic, who I was very successful with for many years.

“I was thinking about different people and a discussion about Andy Murray appeared on the table with me and my team. We were like, ‘Okay, I’m going to give him a call.' It caught him a little off guard because he wasn’t expecting it.

“We connected really fast and he accepted it after a few days. I can’t be more excited about it. This collaboration is a surprise to me as well as everyone, but it’s exciting for tennis.

“He’s been one of my greatest rivals and we’re the same age. We played each other in all the biggest stadiums in our sport.”
