Amazon Prime commentator Guy Mowbray apologised after erroneously claiming that long-retired Stoke City hero Rory Delap was lining up for Ipswich Town on Tuesday night. The streaming service has the rights to show this week's Premier League action but viewers were left baffled ahead of the Tractor Boys' clash with Crystal Palace.

Mowbray was talking fans through the Ipswich line-up before the match. The experienced commentator revealed that ex-midfielder Delap would be playing up front for the hosts.

He, of course, meant the long-throw specialist's son, Liam, who has been in excellent form for Ipswich this season. Mowbray joked about his mistake soon after. The 52-year-old quipped that he was "showing my age" by confusing Delap Snr with Delap Jnr.

Liam joined Ipswich from Manchester City during the summer transfer window. He has scored an impressive six goals in his first full Premier League campaign, despite his side sitting second from bottom in the top tier.

The 21-year-old was a £20million addition from City, whose academy he joined from Derby in 2019. Delap had struggled to get into City's star-studded senior squad and enjoyed loan spells at Stoke, Preston and Hull.

Despite his positive form this season, Delap was unable to prevent Ipswich falling to a 1-0 defeat against Palace. Jean-Philippe Mateta's excellent second-half finish moved the Eagles away from the relegation zone. It was only their second victory over the campaign.

Delap was withdrawn in the 80th minute having endured a tough night at Portman Road. He was largely kept quiet by Palace's back three of Marc Guehi, Trevoh Chalobah and Maxence Lacroix.

Ipswich face a fight to keep Delap despite him only arriving four months ago. City inserted a buy-black clause into his contract and will receive 20 per cent of his future transfer fee.

Chelsea, Manchester United and Juventus have all been widely linked with moves for the England Under-21 international. Blues boss Enzo Maresca and recruitment chief Joe Shields both know him from his time at City.

Delap said last week: "It's not anything I'm aware of or interested in to be honest. I think that's a question for other people and for the chairman. My full focus is on this season and, with regards to Liam, trying to help him to continue to improve. I know Liam's full focus is here and trying to help the team."

His father, Rory, made 359 Premier League appearances for the likes of Stoke, Derby and Southampton.
