Banish mould and odours from washing machines with cleaning pro’s ‘most efficient’ hackMany people often neglect their washing machines, but they do need cleaning regularly. If not cleaned, limescale and mould may begin to build up as well as nasty smells lingering in the appliance. Cleaning the washing machine every month or two can help it to stay efficient, resulting in lower energy bills. Karren Barrigan, a cleaning expert at Housetastic.co.uk, said: “The easiest and most efficient way to clean a washing machine drum is to put on an empty cycle. “To do this, add a little bit of washing detergent directly into the drum, and set it off on a hot wash, around 60C. “Try to put the cycle on the hottest possible wash by your appliance, in order to kill germs, and remove any build-up and limescale.” If you want to do a deep clean, add a scoop of baking soda to the drum, followed by some white vinegar in the detergent drawer. Once the cycle is over, make sure to give the drawer a good clean by lifting it out and soaking it in some warm soapy water. The expert added: “Due to the drawer always being shut, old detergent can stay moist for long periods of time which can eventually lead to mould. “Putting on a cycle with a mouldy drawer can lead to bad bacteria and odours on our clothing. “Ensure you regularly maintain the drawer by removing it and scrubbing it with an old toothbrush.” After these areas are pristine, it’s time to clean the filter, which is located at the bottom of the machine. Despite being one of the most important areas to clean, it is often the one which is forgotten because it tends to hide behind a little flap. The filter helps to prevent dirt and fibres from entering the drum, and not cleaning it can result in flooding as well as musty odours. It’s important to remove it regularly following the manufacturer’s instructions and drain it to release it. Karren noted: “Empty the filter and allow any trapped dirt and water to escape - lay down a towel if needed. “Give the cavity once over with a cloth to remove any excess and then replace the filter and cover.” Make sure to clean these three areas at least every couple of months to maintain good hygiene and ensure the machine works to the best of its ability.
