Transform rough towels into ‘soft and fluffy’ ones with 35p ingredient hotels love to use

Towels often turn hard and rough due to how they are washed and dried, including using too much detergent and fabric softener.

Hard water, over-drying and filling the washing machine up too much are also factors.

According to the CEO of Laundryheap, Deyan Dimitrov, baking soda and white vinegar work well to soften towels.

The expert explained: “Both common household ingredients can be used separately as ways to transform tough towels into soft ones.

“Simply add 250ml of white vinegar to the washing machine drum alongside the liquid detergent you normally use and dry as normal.”

You can also use bicarbonate of soda to make your towels soft and fluffy.

“Mix eight tablespoons of baking soda with your laundry detergent before putting it in the washing machine.

“This will help loosen up the towel fibres and get rid of any dirt, keeping your towels as good as new.”

Many people often worry about using white vinegar in their laundry because of the strong scent but towels aren’t left smelling of vinegar after using it.

White distilled vinegar can be picked up from many supermarkets, including Tesco for 35p, and hotels love to use it.

Other ways to ensure towels come up soft and fluffy include keeping towels and clothing separate.

The founder of Piglet in Bed, Jessica Hanley, said: “Washing towels with clothes can transfer a lot of bacteria between each item in the washing cycle.

“Make sure you shake any excess water from your towels before placing them in the dryer, as this will help fluff the material and keep them absorbent.

“Avoid leaving wet towels to sit in the washer for a long period of time too, as this can result in an unpleasant musty smell.”

When it comes to drying towels, avoid using hot heat as this may damage the cotton fibres, so use low heat for a longer period of time.

When storing them, make sure to fold them into a neat pile so they stay in good shape.

Jessica said: “Begin by holding the short end of the towel at chest height and then fold each edge across to meet the opposite side fold to achieve neatly overlapping thirds.

“Fold up the bottom third of the towel, then fold the top third down, and store with the outer folded edge of the towel facing out to make it easy to grab your towels off the shelf - and keep your closet looking great.”
