Upcoming Tom Hardy thriller could be one of the best action films ever | Films | Entertainment

Netflix has unveiled the first tantalising glimpses of a new action-packed thriller featuring Tom Hardy, set to hit our screens in 2025.

The esteemed actor from Venom and Legend is at the helm of what's shaping up to be an adrenaline-fueled ride, portraying a detective embarking on a perilous quest to execute a bold rescue.

His journey takes him into the treacherous depths of the criminal underworld, where he stumbles upon a sprawling conspiracy lurking at the heart of his metropolis.

The film, titled Havoc, is slated for release in 2025 and is directed by Gareth Evans, the mastermind behind the critically lauded martial arts epics The Raid and The Raid 2.

Freshly released stills showcase Hardy's character springing into explosive action, alongside a glimpse of co-star Jessie Mei Li, who rose to fame with Shadow and Bone, reports the Mirror.

Joining the cast are Timothy Olyphant and Forest Whitaker, with Justin Cornwell, Quelin Sepulveda, and Luis Guzman also on board.

The official synopsis teases: "After a drug deal gone wrong, a bruised detective must fight his way through a criminal underworld to rescue a politician's estranged son, while unravelling a deep web of corruption and conspiracy that ensnares his entire city."

Evans' The Raid movies have been hailed as some of the finest martial arts showcases this century.

The Guardian has lauded The Raid as "a stone-cold masterpiece", hailing it as "one of the best action flicks ever made" and noting that "in a little over a decade, The Raid has established itself as an action movie classic."

The sequel to the hit action franchise has been met with a strong reaction from Empire, who noted: "There is an astonishing amount of violent action here, doled out in hearty portions and captured with such an unflinching gaze that even the strongest stomach might spasm.

"Legs snap. Throats and knives interact. Heads are pulped into sausage-meat. Evans is a director who never knowingly underkills."

The film series hasn't just impressed critics but has built a fervent fanbase as well, with one avid Redditor hailing the original as "my favourite action film".

"The story flows really well. With sinister overtones, and things going from bad to worse, teetering between doom and victory," they continued.

"The fights are super human, making really good use of camera angles and top rate fight-o-graphy."

Another fan voiced their preference, responding: "I personally thought the second one is actually better if you can get 2 and a half hours free for it. Both are my top two action movies of all time though, no doubt."

Under the guidance of a visionary like Evans, expectations are high that Havoc will become one of the next year's most talked-about and explosive blockbusters.

Havoc will be released in 2025 on Netflix.
