The beautifully 'authentic' African island that's 'not overrun with tourists' | World | News

Travel experts are recommending Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Tanzania, as an “affordable” and “authentic” destination for those looking to avoid the usual tourist crowds.

Known for its beautiful beaches, culture and history, Zanzibar offers a relaxed alternative to more crowded spots.

Lucia Polla, a travel expert and founder of Viva La Vita, told the Express: “Zanzibar is a place that still feels genuine. The beaches are softer, whiter, and less crowded than in many popular destinations.

“In Stone Town, you get a mix of culture and history that’s very different from Europe.”

Stone Town is the island’s main town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site with narrow streets, historic buildings, and a mix of African, Arabic, and Indian influences.

Local food is affordable, with options like tagines and seafood available from street vendors.

Paul Fournier, the founder of Journey Compass, also praised Zanzibar for its friendly locals and rich culture.

He told the Express: “It’s not like the crowded city squares in Europe. Here, people stop to talk, share stories, and welcome you in a way that feels personal.”

Zanzibar’s warm climate makes it a year-round destination, though June to October is the best time for beach weather.

The island is known for its clear waters and activities like snorkelling, diving, and boat trips to nearby islands.

However, travellers should take note of recent changes and safety advice.

Since October 2024, all visitors to Zanzibar are required to have Inbound Travel Insurance from Zanzibar Insurance Corporation for the length of their stay. Visitors may be refused entry without it.

The British government also advises visitors to stay alert in busy areas, especially in Stone Town, and to avoid carrying valuables.

Petty theft can happen in popular tourist spots, so keeping belongings secure is recommended.

Full travel advice can be found on the government’s website.
