Hungary boss provides Adam Szalai update after terrifying medical emergency in dugout | Football | Sport

Hungary manager Marco Rossi issued an update on Adam Szalai's condition after the former player suffered a medical emergency.

Play was stopped early in the first half when it became clear Szalai had fallen ill, with players, including Hungary's Dominik Szoboszlai, pictured in tears.

There was a lengthy stoppage to the match at the Johan Cruyff Arena, with play eventually resuming after Szalai had been tended to.

Szalai is a much-loved member of the Hungarian backroom staff, having made over 80 caps for the Magyars.

Thankfully, the former Mainz 05 and Schalke 04 star is believed to be okay.

Speaking after the contest in Amsterdam, Rossi said: "Adam is no longer in danger, we wish him the best. The players decided to continue, after the penalty it became more difficult for us."

A statement from the Hungarian FA midway through the match had confirmed Szalai as the coach who fell ill.

It read: "Adam Szalai fell ill in the first minutes of the Netherlands-Hungary match, but his condition is stable and he is conscious.

"Minutes ago, he was transported by ambulance to an Amsterdam hospital for examination."

Netherlands skipper Virgil van Dijk praised the Hungarian players for continuing after the incident during his post-match debrief.

The Liverpool star said: “Lots of respect for the Hungarian players for their decision to keep on playing after the incident, it shows a lot of strength from their side.”

The incident comes after one of Szalai's Hungary team-mates suffered a nasty head injury at the summer's European Championship.

Barnabas Varga collided with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn during the group meeting in Germany, with Rossi confirming afterwards the striker would require surgery.

Hungary weren't able to leave the Netherlands with anything to show for their efforts though on Saturday, as the home side ran out comfortable 4-0 winners.

Goals from Wout Weghorst, Cody Gakpo, Denzel Dumfries and Teun Koopmeiners did the damage for Ronald Koeman's side.

Because of Germany's thumping victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the other group game, Hungary have been confirmed in third place in the League A group.

Rossi and Co. will wrap their Nations League campaign up with a clash against group leaders Germany on Tuesday.

Germany have already been confirmed as the group winners and will compete at the competition's finals in June 2025.

Elsewhere across Saturday's Nations League action, Sweden saw off Slovakia and Wales were held to a goalless draw against Turkey.
