Save money with 5 hacks to keep your home warm

Lisa Davis, Product Advisor at Opera Beds shared five cost-effective tips to make the bedroom feel warmer this winter without turning on the radiator.

"Positioning your bed on interior walls is generally best," said Davis, who explained that the headboard leaning against an exterior wall is likely to feel more cold than if it's next to an interior wall.

"You should also place the bed away from windows, as even the most insulated windows can lose heat and let in cold draughts," Davis added.

Speaking of draughts, Davis added: "Make sure to seal all draughts from windows and doors using weather stripping and window film, as this can have a much bigger impact than you might expect.

"To find any draughts in your home you can feel for air movement around doors, windows, floorboards, beams, skirting boards, and air conditioning units."

She added: "Keep doors to unused rooms closed to concentrate warmth where you need it most and use a draught excluder to block chilly air from under doors."

Another top tip is to "close curtains after the sun has set to retain warmth" – especially if you have curtains with a thermal lining.

As for bedding, flannel or cotton sheets "feel warmer" during the winter months and help you to "retain body heat" while falling asleep.

"Add multiple layers like a duvet, throw blankets, or even a weighted blanket, making it easy to adjust your warmth through the night," said Davis.

"Investing in a good-quality winter duvet with a high tog, between 10.5 and 13.5, is best." Davis said: "Opt for insulating materials like wool or fleece for better heat retention, and consider a mattress topper for added warmth; memory foam or wool are great options."

As for an electric blanket, this could be a cheaper option than putting on the central heating. Davis elaborated: "Running an electric blanket costs just 20p a night on average, which is 60 times cheaper than central heating.

"So, an electric blanket is a great option to heat your bed and keep it consistently warm through the night."
