How to remove weeds from gravel fast and for good without vinegar or chemicals

Weeds can be the bane of a homeowner’s existence, particularly when they invade a gravel driveway.

The loose and nutrient-poor environment of gravel driveways creates a perfect breeding ground for weeds, as they face little competition from other plants.

Removing weeds from gravel is notoriously challenging as their roots tend to intertwine with the stones, making eradication a tough task.

Gene Caballero, a lawn care expert and co-founder of GreenPal, has described gravel weeds as a “nightmare” but reassures that removal can be “easily” achieved.

He noted: “If you have a gravel driveway, you are likely no stranger to weeds being an issue. And you know what a nightmare they can be to deal with. Using these methods you can remove weeds and keep them away.”

One of the fastest ways to kill weeds is by using salt combined with hot water. While this method is generally not advised for gardeners because it kills all plant life and prevents future growth, it’s less problematic for driveways.

Gene explained: “It’s true, killing weeds in your driveway is as simple as spreading regular table salt. Of course, you can also use Epsom salt or water softener salt."

He continued: “The weeds in your driveway are surrounded by stone which attracts a lot of heat, at least when exposed to direct sunlight.

“By working to dehydrate the weeds in your driveway by spreading salt you can kill the weeds in your driveway fairly easily in an eco-friendly fashion.”

All you need to do is combine salt and boiling water in a container and pour it over your driveway.

Please exercise caution when using this salt solution near grass or flowerbeds, and avoid doing it after rainfall as the solution could easily seep into the surrounding soil.

For gardeners who are not seeing results by just using salt and boiling water, the expert has shared a natural homemade herbicide recipe to keep gravel weeds at bay.

He said: “You’ll need one gallon of white vinegar, a cup of salt and half a cup of dish soap."

Gene advised: “Simply mix all the ingredients together in a pump sprayer and apply it to the weeds in your driveway.”
