Sharing Netflix shows just got easier thanks to this free mobile updat

Netflix is one of the most popular subscription services in the world thanks to its huge library of films and TV shows accessible by one monthly fee, but the firm has recently been cracking down on those who share their account passwords to try and get everyone to sign up.

But it seems there’s a different kind of sharing that Netflix doesn’t mind you doing. The streaming giant has just revealed it is rolling out a brand new feature that’s exclusive to iPhone and Android that lets you share scenes from movies and shows at the tap of a button.

During any scene on any stream, you can tap to bring up all options and a new Moments option will appear at the bottom of the screen. From there you can save the ‘moment’, which will stay saved for you to go back and watch again. But you can also share this moment by copying the link to send, or from the embedded options of Instagram messages, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Instagram Stories, Facebook Messenger or text message.

People who are logged into Netflix on their device can then tap your link wherever you’ve sent it and immediately go and watch the scene too. All your saved Moments will be saved in your My Netflix tab.

Netflix said the feature is out now globally for iOS - that’s iPhone and iPad - but it’s not showing up yet on our devices. Android users should see Moments land “in the coming weeks”.

“Whether you’re replaying the intense final showdown in BEEF or a spooky twist in Wednesday, Moments lets you save and share it all,” Netflix said. “And with Season 2 of Squid Game coming on Dec. 26, it’s the perfect time to revisit those nail-biting game sequences from Season 1 and get ready for what’s next.”

The move seems to be an effort to get Netflix content shared more widely on social platforms with links to the content itself. If you tap on a Moments link and you don’t have a Netflix account, presumably you will be presented with the chance to sign up to one.

Streaming subscriptions are incredibly common in 2024, and Netflix is seeing extremely aggressive competition from Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+ and Paramount+ to name but a few. While Moments is a fun new addition, the original streaming giant could be experimenting with new ways to keep its content shareable after it decided to stop people sharing login passwords.
