Gardener names item that's 'great addition to your compost' and you only have in October

Chris Bonnett, gardening expert at GardeningExpress has offered five ways in which households can repurpose their pumpkins instead of throwing them away after October 31, including harvesting seeds and composting them.

Tonnes of pumpkins get thrown away every year after Halloween is over, contributing to the production of harmful greenhouse gas.

Instead of opting to stack up your pumpkins on bin day there are many alternative ways you can repurpose your pumpkins at home which can also benefit your garden.

Whether you decide to let the pumpkin naturally decompose into the soil or maintain it as a planter, repurposing your spooky decoration can boost the health and aesthetic of your outdoor space.

However, be mindful not to leave pumpkins out for wildlife to eat. Although some critters may enjoy nibbling at your retired decoration, it can be harmful to others, including hedgehogs.

Here are Chris Bonnett’s tips for repurposing pumpkins this Halloween:

Compost

Pumpkins are a great addition to your compost as they break down quickly whilst also releasing nutrients into the soil. Just be sure to remove any leftover candle wax and break them down into small pieces to help the composting process.

Planters

Pumpkins can make good natural planters due to their shape and size. Line with weed fabric and fill them with soil before planting autumn flowers. When the pumpkin eventually breaks down and decomposes it will add extra valuable nutrients to the plant.

Seeds

There are many ways to reuse pumpkin seeds. You can save them to grow for the next Halloween, roast them and add oil and your favourite spices to have as a healthy snack, or even offer them to the birds which visit your garden.

Bury in the soil

If you are unable to compost the pumpkins you could bury pieces into the soil. Dig a hole, place the pieces and fill back up with soil to allow your plants to benefit from the rich organic matter that pumpkins carry.

Decor

Whilst the pumpkin remains in good condition you can use them as autumnal decorations for your garden. They can be placed on steps, alongside pathways or around garden beds to add a special touch following the Halloween tradition.
