Doctor: 'You can catch all 3 Tripledemic viruses at the same time' | UK | News

Britons are being warned of a new health threat as the winter approaches.

People are urged to get vaccinated amid the possibility of catching three viruses simultaneously in a scenario being dubbed the “tripledemic”.

Medical experts have said it is possible to get respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), coronavirus and flu all at once as the temperatures dip.

As a result, vulnerable groups such as the elderly, care home residents and those with weakened immune systems are being asked to get jabbed against Covid and flu as soon as possible.

A GP told the Manchester Evening News : "Each of these viruses can cause severe illness, especially in vulnerable groups like the elderly, young children, and those with weakened immune systems."

Health officials are concerned that the combination of the viruses could wreak havoc across the country during the colder months.

Over the past two winters, there have been at least 18,000 deaths linked to flu and over 19,500 deaths associated with Covid, according to UKHSA figures.

In an interview with The Independent, private GP Dr Chun Tang said: “A tripledemic refers to side-by-side outbreaks of three respiratory illnesses, typically occurring during the autumn and winter seasons.

“It's possible to contract more than one of these viruses together.

"Being infected with multiple respiratory viruses can increase the severity of illness and make it harder for the body to recover, especially for those with weakened immune systems or existing health conditions.”

NHS director for vaccinations Steve Russell added: “With new figures showing thousands of deaths associated with Covid and flu in recent years, it is clear that the threat of winter viruses is all too real and it is vital that anyone eligible takes up the offer to get vaccinated.

“There are many slots still available with GP practices, pharmacies and other NHS teams offering quick and easy appointments. If you have not booked yet then please do using the NHS website, NHS App, or by calling 119 – it could keep you out of hospital this winter.”
