New £145m bridge opens to ‘end traffic chaos’ in UK town | UK | News

A bridge in Lowestoft, Suffolk, has finally opened for use after being under construction since 2021. The Gull Wing Bridge opened on September 7 with pedestrians and vehicles making the crossing - an exciting experience for locals who have long awaited it.

Due to delays, the bridge opened much later than expected - Suffolk County Council originally planned to open the bridge last year.

While there are other bridges in place which offer a similar route, it is hoped that this one will help with traffic congestion. It is the third crossing over Lake Lothing.

To celebrate the new bridge, a vintage bus from East Anglia Transport Museum passed over the bridge before its official opening. On November 19, an official ceremony will be held.

Locals have been asking for a third crossing for years in hopes that there will be less traffic on the other two bridges which is a known issue for those who need to make the journey regularly.

Plans for this bridge were approved in 2015, and now nine years later, it is finally open and locals are overjoyed.

The bridge will be both an important transport link which connects the area but also will be known as a new landmark for the town.

Impressively, the bridge has already been used for the Tour of Britian which saw hundreds of cyclists ride over it.

While under construction, 76 local people were employed as well as apprenticeships and volunteer work which provided opportunities for people in the area.

One of the largest of its kind, the bridge spans 39.5 metres long, 22 metres wide and 35 metres tall.

Locals have already spoke out about the benefits of the bridge on social media, praising its ability to cut traffic time successfuly.
