Holidaymakers warned of ban and £5k fine on plane after viral TikTok | Travel News | Travel

While the summer holidays have ended for some, others are still embarking on their long-awaited journeys. If you missed out on a summer getaway, you might be considering a winter escape. However, it's crucial to be aware of certain regulations to avoid hefty fines that will end up costing more than your holiday.

Many are familiar with airport security rules and the items permitted through checkpoints. However, some travellers may not realise the restrictions that apply on board, such as the prohibition of vaping during flights.

Netflights' experts have delved into the repercussions of vaping on an aeroplane, stressing the importance of adhering to the rules to avoid substantial fines and the possibility of a criminal record.

Most airlines prohibit vaping on board their aircraft, just as smoking is prohibited. This is due to potential safety risks like fires and interference with electronic systems, and discomfort to other passengers. E-cigarettes must be switched off and stored away throughout the entire flight, per safety regulations.

It comes after a recent TikTok gained over 11 million views sharing a video of a party that broke out on a flight to Ibiza with passengers vaping and causing chaos on the flight. The video has over 950k likes on the popular social media app, and users have been commenting that vaping on the flight is “disrespectful” and others commenting “my worst nightmare”.

If you are a passenger who breaks the rules and decides to vape on the plane, you'll likely face a hefty fine which in the UK can be as much as £5,000. Other consequences may include being banned from flying with the airline in the future, and even criminal charges.

Flight experts at Netflights said: "It is strongly advised to follow the in-flight rules and regulations. Not only does breaking the rules regarding vaping on flights result in significant consequences for the passenger, but it also disrupts fellow passengers' flights who don’t appreciate vaping and these behaviours.

"Vaping on a plane is dangerous because electronic smoking devices contain lithium batteries that pose a fire risk. Although you’re allowed to take the device on a plane they must be appropriately packed and not used during the flight.

"Vapes and e-cigarettes must only be placed in your carry-on luggage and stay there for the duration of your flight. If a passenger uses their vape on a plane this could cause plane grounding, delays and further complications for all passengers on board. Some passengers may be tempted to try to vape in the toilet on the flight, thinking this is an undetected location. However, this is illegal and flight attendants will still be able to detect this.”
