How to soften hard towels: Add two natural ingredients to the washing machine

It can be annoying when your towels become stiff and scratchy, but there is a simple way to get them fluffy again with one laundry tr.

Towels often become hard over time if you overfill your washing machine as there will not be enough space to rinse them properly, meaning soapy residue can build up in the fabric.

Cassandra, a cleaning expert and founder of Frugal Family, has also shared that using too much laundry detergent can also cause towels to feel uncomfortable.

She said: “The washing detergent you use to wash your towels can build up in the fibres of your towel and will gradually make your towels less fluff and more rough, and will mean that they’re not as absorbent as they once were.”

However, there is a quick and easy way to revive “cardboard” feeling towels to get them looking brand new, as all you need are two natural kitchen ingredients.

Cassandra said: “Non-fluffy towels are super easy to fix though and just need a couple of things you’ll probably already have in your kitchen storecupboard – white vinegar and baking powder.”

How does it work?

White vinegar can make towels soft again due to how acidic it is, which can break down the alkaline detergent to make it much easier for the towels to become fully cleaned again.

Towels will also feel much softer after using vinegar on them as it works as a natural fabric softener to relax to fibres on towels.

Baking soda is mildly abrasive, meaning it gently lifts any remaining build-up from the fibres that the vinegar did not get rid of.

How to naturally get towels fluffy again

Gather all your stuff towels and place them in the washing machine, but make sure not to overload the drum.

Add 240ml of white vinegar to the detergent drawer, and so not add washing detergent or fabric softener.

Wash on a hot 90C cycle and once the wash has finished, do another high-temperature wash but this time add 200g to the detergent drawer.

Your towels should already feel much better, but make sure to dry them outside in the sun or a gentle setting in the tumble dryer.

Once the towels are dried, they should be fully revived and as fluffy as the day you bought them.

Cassandra said: “The towel refresh wash should remove all of the soapy residues from your towels and in most cases, should make them much softer again but sometimes it might take a couple of washes to see the difference depending on how far gone your towels were”
