Harry and Meghan broke 2 royal traditions when Prince Archie was born | Royal | News

A royal expert has said that Meghan and Harry broke royal protocol around the Birth of their first child, Archie.

The issue revolved around publicly naming the child's godparents, with expert Robery Lacey commenting that royal convention dictates that ‘It is still expected,’ for the names to be made public.

Lacey, commenting in 2020 for the Mail shortly after Archie’s birth, wrote “How can you judge the suitability of a sponsor who remains unknown? Yet the names of Archie’s godparents are still a secret today."

Reports since have suggested that Archie, who is fifth in line to the throne, godparents include the Duke of Westminster Hugh Grovsner and Harry’s childhood Nanny - Tiggy Pettyfer.

These names however have never been confirmed by the couple.

This absence is all the more confusing due to the very public nature and persona of Princess Lilibet, the couple’s second child's, Godparents, one of whom is Hollywood Mogul Tyler Perry.

Historian and Author Lacey said the "refusal" by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to play ball stood out, particularly due to Archie being so high in the line of succession.

A second breach

Lacey also noted a further deviation from royal protocol was the “refusal” to do that traditional photoshoot on the steps of Royal Paddington Hospital where many royals give birth.

The decision to forgo the ‘Lindo Wing’ photocall - which Kate had done with all three of her newborn children - led to confusion about when and where Archie had been born.

Harry and Meghan have never been afraid to defer from the normal protocol of the royal family, instead choosing to release the first pictures of Baby Archie from a photoshoot at Windsor Castle.

Harry noted in the couple's six part Netflix series the “Abuse,” the couple had received for choosing to give birth at Portland Hospital, also in London, as opposed to St. Mary's Hospital, in the hope of avoiding the spotlight.

"The amount of abuse that we got, especially you, but both of us, for not wanting to serve our child up on a silver platter, was incredible."

Both Meghan and Kate have spoken about the pressure of the expected photoshoot of their new child on the steps of the hospital. Kate admitted on a podcast appearance that the shoot was "slightly terrifying,” with Meghan describing the picture as “Added pressure.”
