Liverpool 'working to complete' second signing after unveiling Giorgi Mamardashvili | Football | Sport

Liverpool are reportedly ‘working to complete’ the signing of Juventus star Federico Chiesa before the transfer window closes on Friday.

The Reds have been quiet over the past few months after Arne Slot ruled that he wanted to work with his squad in pre-season before highlighting areas for improvement. But Liverpool appear to have kicked into gear this week.

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia in a deal worth £29million including add-ons, and they are now pushing to bolster their forward ranks.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool are accelerating their push to sign Chiesa from Juventus, with a fee in the region of £12million expected to be enough to secure the signature of the versatile forward.

The Reds are long-term admirers of Chiesa and have now ruled that this summer is the ideal opportunity to acquire his services on a cheap deal. Slot’s side reportedly held exploratory talks with Juve earlier this week and they have decided to ‘proceed’ with their pursuit.

Liverpool are in discussions with the Italy international over a four-year deal.

The Reds have been heavily linked with signing a forward this summer, with reports speculating on several occasions that Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz could depart.

However, despite both players appearing set to stay at Anfield, Slot is opting to sign an alternative option out wide.

Chiesa is also capable of playing on either flank as well as through the middle, and his versatility is likely to be a very attractive attribute to those on Merseyside.

Chelsea and Tottenham have been linked with the 26-year-old previously as a result, with Newcastle said to be among his admirers as well as they scour the market for reinforcements on the right-wing.

Juventus have made it no secret that they are keen to part ways with Chiesa this summer, with manager Thiago Motta openly admitting that the forward’s future lies away from the Allianz Stadium in pre-season.

After not naming the No. 7 in his squad for a pre-season friendly against Ligue 1 side Brest, he said: “Chiesa and all the other players not called up for today’s game are not part of the project.

“We have been clear with them, they have to find a new solution and new club as soon as possible. The decision has been made.”
