Logan Sargeant's car bursts into flames after huge crash at Dutch Grand Prix | F1 | Sport

Logan Sargeant suffered a massive shunt at Turn Four during FP3 ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix. The under-fire American destroyed his Williams machine in the process, placing his participation in qualifying in doubt.

15 minutes into a weather-affected FP3 session, Sargeant lost control of his FW46, spinning hard into the outside barrier at Turn Four and bringing out the red flag.

His car then caught fire, forcing him to quickly jump out of the cockpit and engage the fire marshalls, who arrived to limit any further damage to an already-wrecked Williams machine.

Sargeant's shunt had a considerable impact on the rest of the field. The barriers took significant damage from the contact, leading to a lengthy red flag that ran down the clock on the final practice session of the weekend.

However, the biggest implications were for Sargeant himself. "There's no good time [to crash]," said his team principal James Vowles when interviewed by Sky Sports F1 shortly after the shunt.

"Hundreds of hours are spent on making things. The worst time is when you have just introduced some bits and you put it into the wall. The difficulty there is it's FP3. Qualifying will be upon us pretty quickly but the car is in a pretty bad state."

Explaining the next steps, Vowles confirmed that Williams have the necessary spare parts to perform a repair job ahead of the Grand Prix on Sunday.

"Yes," he confirmed. "But, there's a limited amount, so if something happens to the other car, you need to make sure in parc ferme that you have spares. That's what I want to understand now. Can you service both cars?

"The first step of it is we will go through in detail what's been damaged. It looks pretty serious and that could result in a chassis change."
