Grand Theft Auto fans are reeling over the announcement that a big GTA project has essentially been cancelled. If you cast your mind back to 2021, Meta confirmed that Grand Theft Auto San Andreas was in development for its range of virtual reality headsets. Needless to say, the lack of any updates in the years since has led to speculation that development may not have been going as smoothly as Rockstar Games and Meta would have liked. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Meta has since revealed that GTA San Andreas VR is "on hold indefinitely", which barring any major change in circumstances, means the game is not going to happen.

The news was confirmed in a statement to IGN: "GTA: San Andreas is on hold indefinitely while we both focus on other projects. We look forward to working with our friends at Rockstar in the future."

While it's a shame that GTA San Andreas VR seemingly isn't going to happen, it could have a positive knock on effect for the GTA 6 release date.

Without any other projects to worry about, Rockstar Games can concentrate all of its efforts on the smooth development of Grand Theft Auto 6.

GTA 6 is pencilled in for an autumn 2025 release date, something which Rockstar parent company Take-Two is confident of achieving.

Grand Theft Auto 6 takes place in the state of Leonida, which is based on Florida.

Rockstar explains: "Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet."

The trailer gives fans a look some of the map locations as seen from the skies above. This includes locations based on the Florida Keys, as well as the beach and more.

Hopefully we'll get a better look at the locations, as well as some gameplay in the next GTA 6 trailer, which is rumoured to drop on October 4.
