How to grow thicker and greener lawn fast with gardening expert’s 3 easy essential steps

Lawns that are thick, green and luscious are what many homeowners dream of, especially in the summer months.

A lawn that has thin or bare areas can be a major source of frustration. But how to make grass thicker can sometimes feel like a hard-to-solve issue.

In fact, you might have even tried a lot of different things and still aren’t getting the results that you desire.

You just want some cut-and-dry answers as to how to achieve a fuller lawn that you can be proud to show off.

That’s where gardener and founder of Yardwork, an online plant nursery and landscaping platform, Michael Clarke comes in.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, the gardening pro has shared the “best way” to thicken lawns and make them “greener” for the rest of summer which involves three steps.

He claimed: “The best way to thicken lawns and make them greener in summer is to aerate, using a mechanical core aeration machine, overseed, and fertilise.”

Aeration is the process of creating small holes in the soil by removing existing soil “plugs”.

This allows nutrients, oxygen, and water to get further into the root zone of grass, especially in places with hard, compacted or heavy clay soil types, helping to “stimulate the growth of much thicker and greener grass”.

After aeration, it's a “good idea” to apply grass seed to allow new grass to form in between existing grass blades and cover with a light layer of topsoil, to protect the seed from being eaten by birds or other animals.

Distribute the grass seed evenly by hand or use a spreader. First, sow lengthwise and then widthwise.

Lightly rake the grass seed to ensure contact with the soil, accelerating the germination process.

Applying a good fertiliser will allow nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium to get into the root zone and “establish healthier, more robust grass blades”.

If gardeners want to go the extra mile and “keep weeds from sprouting” they will need to “mow regularly” to avoid them from competing with the grass blades and thinning out your lawn over time.
