Climate protesters in Germany shut down airports | World | News

Environmental activists have thrown Germany into chaos after glueing themselves to the runways of four airports.

A total of eight people are involved in the protests, a statement issued by the group said, with Berlin, Cologne/Bonn, Nuremberg and Stuttgart targeted.

It claimed. "Air traffic is currently suspended or restricted at all four locations.

"Two people in orange safety vests each expressed their resistance by displaying banners with the words 'Oil kills' and 'Sign the treaty'. The runways were not entered."

"Protest at BER, Stuttgart, Nuremberg & Cologne/Bonn airports!

"8 people are currently disrupting air traffic. The climate catastrophe is so much more frightening than any threat of punishment: it is destroying the future of us all! Our very existence is at stake!"

PolitizeiMittelfranken said of Nuremberg: "Flight operations have been suspended.

"Work is already underway to remove the people from the runway."

Cologne/Bonn airport also confirmed all flights were suspended, with a post on its official X account saying: "On Thursday, August 15, 2024, unauthorised persons gained access to the airside area of the airport grounds in Cologne/Bonn.

"Flight operations are currently suspended due to the police operation.

"Further information will follow as soon as it is available."

Both airports have now resumed flights.

Despite Last Generation's claims, operations at Berlin and Stuttgart were apparently unaffected.

A pictured shared by Deutsche Well showed a hole cut on the fence at Cologne/Bonn, apparently by the intruders.

Last Generation also targeted the headquarters of the SPD party in Berlin with orange paint, reported Tagesspiegel.

Last Generation was founded three years ago, with its name a reference to the fact that the activists see themselves as the last generation before the Earth reaches the tipping point.

In Germany, their protests have generally focused on blocking roads and runways in an effort to affect transport policy.
