Popular electric car breaks world record for longest range

The Bridgestone Tyres-backed fleet management company Webfleet has broken the Guinness World Record for the longest range achieved by an electric car.

Using a Ford Mustang Mach-E, two drivers from the company completed more than 24 hours of continuous driving, covering 569.64 miles before running out of charge.

Kevin Booker, one of the drivers during the record attempt, stated that the achievement showcases how electric vehicles are constantly improving in their practicality.

He added: "Breaking this record has been an exhilarating journey and a powerful demonstration of what electric vehicles can achieve.

"It is incredible to see how far we have come with EV technology and efficiency. We hope this inspires more people to consider electric vehicles for their everyday travel."

To achieve the world record, which was previously set at 563.97 miles, Webfleet used a conventional Ford Mustang Mach-E Premium Extended Range.

Whilst the company claims that this model has a maximum range of 373 miles per charge, drivers Kevin Brooker and Sam Clarke, who have both previously broken records for fuel economy in petrol and diesel cars, were able to boost the figure.

Using a mix of urban and rural roads across Norfolk to simulate real world driving conditions, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Cambridgeshire, the duo averaged 6.25 miles per kilowatt hour, nearly double the amount a standard EV will achieve.

Beverley Wise, Webfleet UKI Regional Director for Bridgestone Mobility Solutions, also highlighted that careful consideration to the tyres also helped to improve the available range.

She explained: "This record is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in this endeavour.

"It represents a significant milestone in the electrification of road transport and demonstrates the potential of electric vehicles when supported by innovative Bridgestone tyre design and advanced fleet management technology."

Whilst the distance achieved by the two drivers is particularly exceptional, many of the latest electric vehicles have particularly impressive ranges.

Currently, the electric model that has the longest official range, as tested by the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), is the Mercedes-Benz EQS - the German company's flagship EV that can cover 452 miles per charge.

However, more affordable models are also achieving lengthy distances, with the Volkswagen ID7 capable of 437 miles and versions of the Polestar 2 featuring a 406-mile range.
