Gardeners urged to avoid watering lawns during sunny spells or risk 'harming'

With a forecasted heatwave set to bring temperatures up past 30C, Britons with green thumbs are ready to tend to their parched gardens.

While instinct may drive many to douse their lawns during peak sunlight, one gardening whizz has sounded an alert against this typical garden faux pas.

To maintain a lush, verdant lawn throughout the summer's scorching days, it's crucial to understand the ins and outs of effective watering.

Luckily, Fiona Jenkins, a horticultural connoisseur from MyJobQuote.co.uk, is here to provide essential guidance.

Dispelling a widely believed myth about watering grass in bright sunshine, Fiona asserted: "Water droplets don't act like magnifying glasses, and healthy grass can withstand sunlight even when wet."

However, Fiona cautioned that hydrating your lawn under the blazing sun isn't without its pitfalls.

The intensity of daylight coupled with warmth might hasten water evaporation, significantly decreasing the moisture that soaks down to the roots.

This can lead to a decline in your lawns vitality, resulting in stunted growth and a dormant, brittle appearance, cautions Green Man Lawn Care.

Moreover, Fiona points out that wind drift is another factor that could compromise your turf's hydration levels, explaining: "Wind can easily blow water droplets away from your lawn, further reducing the amount of water that reaches the intended target," reports the Mirror.

The gardening guru advises watering your lawn in the early morning hours, ideally before sunrise, due to cooler temperatures.

"Cooler morning temperatures allow for slower evaporation, ensuring the water has more time to soak into the soil and reach the roots," she noted.

Mornings are usually less windy than afternoons, which reduces wind drift and makes sure the water is effectively absorbed by your grass.

She added: "A good morning watering allows the grass blades to dry throughout the day, preventing moisture build-up that can encourage fungal diseases in the evening."
