The underrated Canary Island often ignored by tourists | World | News

A hidden jewel among the Canary Islands barely an hour away from Tenerife remains mostly untouched by the large crowds of tourists that take over Lanzarote every year.

Known for its breathtaking landscapes, mild climate, and unique cultural heritage, La Gomera is an ideal escape from city life.

Unlike its larger counterparts in the Canary Islands, boasts a more relaxed ambience, making it the perfect getaway for those seeking to avoid the masses and immerse themselves in nature.

Getting there is relatively simple despite no direct flights from London.

One can fly to Tenerife South Airport (TFS), a major hub in the Canary Islands, and then take a 40-minute ferry ride from Los Cristianos port to San Sebastian de La Gomera, the island's capital.

The island is famous for its dramatic landscapes and lush greenery, with Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, an absolute must-visit for holidaymakers.

Visitors can explore the park's diverse flora and fauna through numerous hiking trails that offer stunning views.

The island is known for its rugged terrain, featuring steep cliffs, deep ravines, and lush valleys.

While not as renowned for its beaches as some other Canary Islands, La Gomera boasts several secluded beaches with black sand and clear waters.

Popular beach destinations include Playa de Santiago and Valle Gran Rey. The island is also famous for its unique whistling language, Silbo Gomero, used to communicate across the deep ravines and valleys.

Recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Silbo Gomero is still taught in schools and remains a vital part of the island's identity.

The island has also preserved its ancient laurel forests dating back to prehistoric times and offers hiking trails for all skill levels.

Valle Gran Rey, known for its terraced landscapes and charming villages, is another picturesque spot.

Here, visitors can enjoy a stroll or visit Playa de Vueltas, a stunning black-sand beach.

The waters around La Gomera are teeming with various species of whales and dolphins.

Several tour operators offer whale-watching excursions, providing an opportunity to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Tourists are advised to visit the Church of the Assumption, believed to be where Christopher Columbus prayed before he voyaged to the Americas, and explore local markets for traditional Canary Island crafts and foods.
