Novak Djokovic's Andy Murray tribute speaks volumes as emotional Dan Evans reacts | Tennis | Sport

"He’s gonna be missed for British tennis, world game, it’s a figurehead who has gone, I’d say," the 34-year-old said. "But I can’t imagine he will be leaving this sport – I hope he stays around doing something in some capacity. He’s a great motivator when we’re practising and whenever others are practising he gives great advice. Whatever he puts his hand to he’ll be good."

Evans got to live Murray's retirement with him and added: "I felt before all the matches pretty emotional with such a big crowd and had inside me to perform for him as well as myself. It’s strange how it worked out today, we never really got going. Even from 30-0 in the first game. At the end it was going to happen at some point, but all the things he has done for, on behalf of British tennis, there are no words."

And he admitted that he had to encourage Murray to step out on the court to wave goodbye to the fans. "I told him when we were at the chair to get out there. That’s what he’s like he would have gone out, that’s how he is as a man. He doesn’t want the plaudits. A genuine guy, a generous guy and a top, top human being. It was super emotional for me as well to be part of it. It’s all over isn’t," he smiled.
