POLL: Should 'biological males' be allowed to compete in women's boxing? | Other | Sport

If the debate over 'biological male' athletes being allowed to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics was already simmering before the Games, then it has now exploded. On Thursday, Algerian boxer Imane Khelif progressed to the quarter-finals of the women's 66kg after opponent, Italy's Angela Carini, abandoned their bout inside 46 seconds.

By that time, Carini had already taken a heavy blow to the face and been forced to go to her corner to have her headgear readjusted. She later claimed she retired to "preserve my life."

Khelif is one of two athletes, along with Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan, cleared to compete in Paris despite being disqualified from last year's World Championships for failing to meet eligibility criteria. And since the bout, debate has raged as to whether female competitors are being put in serious danger.
