It can be a real nuisance dealing with wasps in summer as no one wants to be stung by these annoying insects, but there is a very simple way to keep them out of your home.

Wasps tend to become more aggressive in late summer to early autumn as their queen stops laying eggs, which leads to the wasp colony breaking down and are more likely to seek shelter elsewhere. 

These pests also stop feeding on protein at this time of year which they need for their young and will shift to looking for sugary foods which makes them more attracted to human food, especially at picnics or barbecues. 

Luckily, George,  a homemaking expert and founder of Homemade Mastery, has shared that there is a very easy way to keep wasps away from your home or garden using a homemade trap. 

George said: “Today I’m sharing a simple, homemade, easy DIY wasp trap, so you can also say goodbye to those annoying (and potentially dangerous) wasps!”

How to get rid of wasps 

This homemade trap only takes five minutes to complete but works to lure the wasps away from an area and then trap them so they cannot escape. 

George said: “The way this homemade wasp trap works is with a sweet, liquid bait.

“Wasps would fly into the bottle because they’re attracted to the scent of the bait. Once inside the bottle, they’re unable to find their way out and are eventually drown in the liquid.”

You will need:

• An old plastic bottle
• Wire or string
• A knife or a pair of scissors 
• Hole puncher 
• Sugar or jam
• One other liquid bait ingredient (liquid soap, beer, wine, juice, etc) 

Sugar or jam is sure to attract wasps to your trap but be sure to also use one other sugary liquid bait ingredient so the wasps will drown and die quickly. 

Method 

All you need to do is first place a few tablespoons of your bait ingredients inside the the plastic bottle.

Once you have added the bait, close the bottle with a lid and shake it to make sure the ingredients are mixed together. 

Use a knife or a pair of scissors to carefully cut the top part of the bottle. Turn the top part of the bottle upside down and place it on top of the bottle so that the mouth of the bottle is now inside it. 

At the top of the trap, use a hole puncher to cut two holes across from each other to make a handle, then thread some wire or string through the holes to hang the trap wherever you please. 

Hang the trap near a window or outdoors near an area where you wish to keep wasps away from and wasps will soon fly over to it. 

Make sure to check the trap regularly and pour the bait out to remove dead wasps, but be careful handling it in case there at live wasps inside to prevent strings. 

Your home and garden should be wasp-free in no time so you can enjoy the rest of the summer without worrying about these pesky insects buzzing around.
