Avocados are a versatile fruit that goes well as part of many breakfast dishes, salads, or as a complement to a variety of mains.

But to enjoy your avocados’ fresh taste and vibrant colour, it's essential to know how to store them properly before they start browning.

Several effective methods can help prolong the freshness of your avocado, whether it's already ripe or just cut open.

An expert has given Express.co.uk some tips to keep your avocado fresh and maintain its quality for a longer period.

Vlatka lake, storage expert at Space Station instructed: “Cut open the avocado and remove the pit.

“Immediately coat the flesh of one half with fresh lemon juice or olive oil (olive oil creates a barrier that helps prevent exposure to air).

“Wrap the avocado half in clingfilm or put it in a special container for avocados and place in the fridge.”

You can also keep ripe avocados in water to maintain their freshness without spending a single penny.

The expert added: “Another great method is to submerge your ripe avocado in water.

“Cut your avocado in half and fill a glass or plastic container with water. With the flesh-side down, place the avocado in the container, cover, and put it in the fridge.

“These methods will keep the avocado from turning brown for another two days or so.”

The storage pro concluded: “If your avocado is already ripe but you aren’t planning on eating it quite yet, simply place the whole fruit in the refrigerator. This will keep it fresh for a few days.”
