Gardener shares how often you should deadhead roses to encourage 'more flowers'

I use a small and accurate pair of hand secateurs to do my deadheading as it’s all about hitting the right spot on the stem.

We should step back from the rose plant and assess the state of the flowers, as we only want to deadhead if we can see spent and dead flowers.

A deadhead is easily located, it’s a flower that has dropped its petals to leave the deadhead behind.

This is as much a tidying up exercise as it is to encourage new flowers.

If we do this once per week, however ideally every three days is ideal, we can hopefully keep on top of the spent and dead rose flowers.

We should look out for both singular deadhead and clumps of deadheads on our rose plants. The singular deadhead can be cut back to the start of the deadhead stem, whereas a clump of deadheads can be cut right back to a pen width on the stem.

We should try to avoid snipping just behind a clump of deadheads as this will leave a sudden dead end stem that will take energy away from new buds and flowers.

If you have a bucket ready you can place all the deadheads into it and then dispose of them on a compost or into the green recycling bin.

Deadheading keeps the flowers flowing so it is a very worthwhile gardening job, the more care we give our roses the more they will reward us over the summertime.
