Nigel Farage in bombshell move as he offers to be go-between for Trump and Starmer | Politics | NewsThe Reform UK leader is a close friend of the former president and expects he will “win big” and return to the White House. Mr Farage made a 48-hour round trip to the United States after Mr Trump was shot in a failed assassination attempt. Though the pair met only “for seconds”, Mr Farage said it was important for him to “show my support”. Reflecting on his own brush with death after a plane crash during the 2010 general election, he said: “Trump is obviously very thoughtful after what happened to him. “But he won’t essentially change. People don’t. “I had a near-death experience in 2010. I was emotional about it for a week or two but after that… “You can’t be unaffected by it, of course not. But the essential Trump isn’t going to change.” Mr Farage said he had been struck by how much more professional and calm the Trump campaign is now compared to 2016. “I think there’s a chance now of him winning in a really big solid way,” he said. Mr Farage said the importance of having close relations with America under a Donald Trump presidency means he is prepared to give support behind the scenes to Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour government. “I’ve got the best connections to Trump of anybody in British politics,” he said. “At some point this Labour government needs to have a good relationship if Trump wins in November, which I believe he will. “It was good that he took Starmer’s call. Not surprising because he’s very fond of this country. “But there might be a bit of bridge-building to be done between his administration and Labour and that for me is an issue that is way above party politics. “Maybe behind the scenes I could be diplomatically helpful. “This is in the national interest. “There’s the future of NATO to talk about, what’s happening in Ukraine to talk about. “If I can unofficially be helpful this is something for me that is bigger than party politics.” Mr Farage said Joe Biden’s departure from the presidential race will not stop Mr Trump. He claimed the state of the president’s health had been effectively covered up because the media “Biden’s the good guy, Trump is the bad guy, simple as that” “The guy has not been up to it since the very start,” he added. “It’s been an affront to American voters that they have pretended he is ok.” He accused the president’s wife and son of not putting his best interests first. “If Jill Biden and Hunter Biden love Joe Biden, why did they put him through this elder abuse? Because that’s exactly what it is.” Mr Farage insisted Kamala Harris, the frontrunner to replace Mr Biden as the Democrat candidate, is not a threat to Mr Trump. He said: “Harris has been a very ineffectual vice president. She’s not good on the public stage. “She has this hyena-like nervous cackle, which is most peculiar, so unless she surprises me somehow I don’t think she’s going to be up to much either.” Source link Posted: 2024-07-22 20:41:18 |
