Four kitchen designs which require ‘constant cleaning’ to avoid in your home

According to kitchen designer Rossella Marzocchella of kitchen handle company Decor and Decor, there are four “popular” kitchen designs which require “constant cleaning”.

1. Dark kitchen cabinets

Dark kitchen cabinets can look classy and make a statement in the home, but they can get dirty fast.

The expert said: “Fingerprints, smudges, dust and food debris show up much more easily in darker kitchens.

“While this isn't a bad thing as you can see more easily when you need to clean your kitchen, for those with busy lifestyles this often isn't practical.

“Some experts may advise you to try matte black as an alternative, as a matte finish can mask smudges a little better, but in my experience, if you don’t have time, you would be better off picking another colour kitchen.”

2. Marble worktops

Marble worktops are very popular and can even be practical if you use the kitchen a lot for cooking and baking, but they can also be high maintenance.

The kitchen expert said marble is porous and can stain easily if drips or stains are not cleaned right away.

Rossella explained: “If you do have an expensive marble worktop, you will have to clean it regularly to keep it maintained.

“Bleach, vinegar and generally chemicals that are acidic can cause dull scars on the marble surface and should not be used when cleaning."

3. Stainless steel cabinets

Stainless steel kitchen cabinets are a very popular kitchen design, with more than 38,000 posts on Instagram.

Even celebrities such as David and Victoria Beckham have used it in their homes.

The expert said: “It's easy to see why stainless steel is a popular design choice in the kitchen as it's functional and easy to wipe over.

“The design trend which you would often associate with a professional kitchen isn't for everyone, but if you are considering using stainless steel in your home you should know that it does mark easily and will require constant cleaning.”

4. Zellige tiles

The kitchen pro continued: “Zellige tiles, also known as Moroccan tiles are handmade ceramic tiles that are hand moulded, hand-cut and hand-glazed making every tile unique.

“While the uniqueness of the tiles adds to their charm, they can be very difficult to clean.

"Dirt, dust, grease and other bits of food can easily become trapped in these tiles because of the imperfect and uneven shapes of the tiles.”

The shape of the tiles also makes them very difficult to clean and can cause cleaning cloths to snag.
