Oscars season Netflix movie's viewership jumps by over 1100 per cent 4 years on | Films | Entertainment

Four years ago, Ron Howard directed Amy Adams and Glenn Close in Netflix awards season movie Hillbilly Elegy.

Based on the 2016 memoir of the same name by JD Vance, the 2020 film has seen its viewership on the streamer increase by 1179 per cent on Monday.

This comes after the author, whose biographical childhood story it is, was announced as Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate for the 2024 US election.

The four-year-old movie was watched for 1.5 million minutes on Sunday when Vance was rumoured to be announced.

But after the news, Hillbilly Elegy was viewed for 19.2 million minutes just 24 hours later, according to Variety.

Vance’s upbringing in Hillbilly Elegy became a talking point in 2016 for why white working-class voters were attracted to voting for Trump.

The book and film focus on the social and socioeconomic problems of his hometown in Middletown, Ohio.

Adams played his mother Bev and Close his grandmother Mamaw. Incredibly, for the latter role, she was both Oscar and Razzie nominated.

Hillbilly Elegy is streaming on Netflix now.
