Ditch white vinegar and use expert’s ‘star ingredient’ to tackle mouldy grout in no time

While there are lots of grout cleaners on the market, they can be quite pricey, which means many people opt for more natural options like white vinegar or bleach.

However, according to an expert, both of these are quite harsh and can “wreck the grout” over time.

The mould experts at Advanced Damp instead recommended using baking soda.

They explained: “Baking soda is a star ingredient when it comes to grout cleaning.

“This wonder ingredient acts as a natural abrasive, meaning it can tackle tough stains without being harsh on the grout itself. As an added bonus, it helps whiten the grout as it cleans."

To clean the grout, mix baking soda and water into a container to form a paste.

“Dip your brush into the paste and then apply it directly to the grout lines.”

This method works great to brighten the grout and can completely restore it within a few uses.

If you have any very stubborn stains, the experts recommended a more potent cleaning paste, using hydrogen peroxide.

They continued: “Not only does hydrogen peroxide boast whitening properties, but it's also effective at tackling mould, similar to bleach.

“Unlike bleach, however, it's a much safer option for household use.

“Combine the two household ingredients in a bowl, mixing them until a thick paste forms.

“Leave it to sit for around five to 10 minutes to allow it to work its magic. Using an old toothbrush, apply the paste to the affected grout lines.”

This method may take a little more scrubbing or a couple of attempts but the results are worth it, according to the pros.

The key to keeping grout gleaming is all about prevention and by taking a few steps every day or week, you can stop grime and mould from building up.

Make sure to dry grout after every shower using an old towel or a squeegee as well as keeping the bathroom well-ventilated.

The pros added: “Mould can multiply, sometimes within 24 hours. This means those wet towels dumped on the floor can quickly become a breeding ground for it.

“To prevent mould from taking hold in your bathroom, make a habit of always hanging up wet towels after use.”
