Inside King Charles's new glamping site at Sandringham | Royal | News

King Charles is set to open a 25-acre luxury glamping site at the Sandringham Estate, it has been revealed.

The monarch has been given permission to go ahead with plans to open the site, which will boast 15 'safari tents'.

The site, which will be added to the Sandringham Estate Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, will only be used for "short stay" holidaymakers.

It will play host to tents which will have their own verandas and built-in barbecues in the heart of the Norfolk-based estate.

The lands stands around six miles from King's Lynn, and currently has 138 pitches - including 11 tents.

Plans, which were submitted to King's Lynn and West Norfolk Council, have now been approved.

The approval allows for King Charles to extend the site to create 28 new all-weather touring caravan pitches.

King Charles will also have the right to expand to 12 camping pitches and 15 glamping safari tent pitches, as well as four premium pitches and two new accessible pitches.

The monarch, who is currently receiving cancer treatment, has also received further permission to make improvements to existing pitches.

This will include the right to enlarge and refurbish the existing reception building and make two new toilet block buildings.

In keeping with only allowing short stays, Stuart Ashworth - who is the assistant director environment and planning at the council - says that the glamping tents "shall not be occupied as a person's sole or main place of residence".

In a letter from Mr Ashworth, he added: "The owners/operators shall maintain an up-to-date register of visits/occupation and shall make this available at all reasonable times to the Local Planning Authority."

The submitted design and access proposal states: "These will be carefully positioned within the woodland so as not to damage the existing trees nor reduce the visual amenity of the site from neighbours. The Sandringham Estate Club Campsite is one of the most popular on the network and is often fully booked.

"The proposal is to extend the touring and camping facility to the south west of the existing site as the land lends itself naturally due to its topography and by being easily accessible from the existing road network..."

Although the home is for private use of the Royal Family, the late Queen Elizabeth II opened the house up to the public to commemorate her Silver Jubilee in 1997.

The Sandringham Estate is the typical location where the royals spend each Christmas Day, with the family regulars each festive season at St Mary Magdalene Church.
