A new type of speed camera on Britain’s roads can catch out unsuspecting drivers - and you won’t even know you’ve been caught.

New ‘ultra’ speed cameras are so advanced that they don’t even flash when they’re triggered, and they work any time day or night in any weather without needing to flash.

The cameras work by using infra-red light to read number plates even in low light. 

That also means they don’t need lines to be painted on the road, so you won’t know when you’re in their ‘catchment area’, and they work in both sides of the road at the same time.

That makes them much harder to see, and much easier to be caught by for speeding and other offences like seatbelts and using a mobile phone at the wheel.

The bad news keeps coming because the cameras are much smaller than traditional yellow boxes, so harder to spot. 

Not only can they be used to detect speeding, they can also tell when you’ve been through a red light or see if you’re on your phone.

The cameras also use AI to scan cars to be even more accurate. The AI is a video system which detects possible infringements like using a phone at the wheel, and then kicks it to a human to review, like VAR.

The cameras are already on Britain’s roads and can be found in Devon, Wales, Cornwall and Manchester. One camera in Cornwall issued a staggering 3,280 tickets in its first week of operation, or 234 fines a day. 

Of course, there is one fail-safe trick to avoid triggering speed cameras: keep an eye on speed limits and don’t speed.
