‘Star’ ingredient brightens and whitens grout within minutes - not bleach or white vinegar

Grout is porous, meaning limescale and mould can easily build up on the surface, often remaining for a long time if not cleaned straight away.

Whilst there are lots of cleaners on the market promising to sort the problem, they can be pricey and often single-use.

According to the mould experts at Advanced Damp, there are lots of ways to brighten grout, including a homemade concoction.

They explained: “You might be tempted to use bleach or white vinegar as they can lighten stains. However, both are quite harsh and can actually wreck the grout over time.

“Without proper attention, grout can make any bathroom or kitchen look grubby no matter how much you clean it - but there’s an easy way to get it sparkling again.

“Baking soda is a star ingredient when it comes to grout cleaning. This wonder ingredient acts as a natural abrasive, meaning it can tackle tough stains without being harsh on the grout itself.

“As an added bonus, it helps whiten the grout as it cleans.”

To clean the grout, simply mix baking soda and water into a container to form a paste. Then, dip a brush into the paste and apply it directly to the grout.

This method may need a few applications before it works, but according to the experts, it’ll “significantly” brighten the grout.

They added: “The beauty lies in its sheet simplicity, just one ingredient, and its effectiveness for a quick and easy clean.

“For a more potent cleaning paste, consider swapping water for hydrogen peroxide.

“Not only does hydrogen peroxide boast whitening properties, but it's also effective at tackling mould, similar to bleach. Unlike bleach, however, it's a much safer option for household use.

“Combine the two household ingredients in a bowl, mixing them until a thick paste forms.  Leave it to sit for around five to 10 minutes to allow it to work its magic. Using an old toothbrush, apply the paste to the affected grout lines.”

According to the pros, it’ll take a few minutes for the grout to instantly brighten, and it may not need a second application.

In order to prevent grout from discolouring in the first place, it’s important to dry the tiles and grout after each shower.

Make sure to keep the bathroom ventilated via a fan or open window and also ensure the shower curtain and bath mats are cleaned regularly.

The experts added: “Mould can multiply rapidly, sometimes within 24 hours. This means those wet towels dumped on the floor can quickly become a breeding ground for it.

“To prevent mould from taking hold in your bathroom, make a habit of always hanging up wet towels after use.”
