Roses are popular garden plants because they come in several different varieties and colours.

They are also ideal for any type of garden, with the majority of them being able to be grown in containers as well as borders.

How long they bloom depends on the variety and how they are cared for, but it is typically for a couple of months.

According to one expert, using banana peel can make roses bloom for even longer.

John Dempsey, a gardening expert at Housetastic, said that applying two to three peels to the soil will provide a “huge advantage” for roses.

If you are about to plant a rose, the peel can be cut up and placed directly into the soil.

If the rose is a couple of years old or isn’t ready to be relocated or repotted, simply place the peel around the top of the soil.

The expert explained: “You should put a chopped banana peel in the bottom of the hole before inserting the plant and mixing the rest with compost and soil around the new plant.”

Banana peel can help to provide potassium to the soil, which will help to enrich it, encouraging the rose to “bloom for longer”.

The fruit also contains lots of calcium, iron and copper which will all aid the rose’s immune system.

John continued: “Watering the soil thoroughly afterwards will aid in the breakdown of the peels and will support new growth.

“Putting a banana peel on the ground near the base of a rose plant is the simplest way to increase potassium levels.

“Chopping the peel first reduces the time it takes for the peel to degrade, allowing the potassium to reach your plants sooner.”

Some other foods which can be added to plant soil include coffee grounds and eggshells.

Fast-growing garden plants deplete the soil of calcium very quickly, meaning eggshells are an ideal supplement and feed for outdoor plants and flowers.

They can also be used to help deter slugs by placing broken shells around precious crops and plants.
