How to clean windows without streaks every time - cleaner’s homemade solution

Windows can quickly get dirty so it’s important to regularly clean them, especially for those who want to maintain a bright and inviting home.

Not only do they enhance your home's aesthetic appeal, but windows also allow natural light to flood your space.

While it might seem you’re doing a good job of cleaning your windows, you may need to review your methods.

It doesn’t matter how effective or thorough you are with cleaning your house, you’ll find smears and streaks on glass windows, if you aren’t careful.

Luckily, cleaning expert Maxine Dwyer has shared her homemade window cleaning solution that promises “streak-free” results in seconds.

Maxine says she starts by using water mixed with soap to break up any dirt and grime, whilst using a squeegee to draw the dirty water off the glass.

She explained that most people go down and down with a squeegee because it’s easier. However, she opts for a squiggly motion like the pros.

The cleaning expert explained that the “most important thing” is to not wash the whole window because if it dries, you’re in trouble because you will have to wet it again.

Start from the top, wash the middle and hope it doesn’t dry too quickly. Then use a squeegee to take the soap and water off the window.

Maxine added: “And then you finish off - just like you see a window cleaner do - clean the edge with an old cloth."

For “streak-free”, shiny windows, Maxine combines one part water and one part white vinegar on the glass and uses a microfibre cloth to rub it around.

Explaining how white vinegar works, she said: “The acid in the water breaks down the streaks as the water evaporates and it will dry sparkling and streak-free. It makes it look brand new, nice and clean.”

This cleaning agent tackles stubborn spots and residue left by commercial cleaners, leaving your windows gleaming and clear.

Using vinegar as a cleaning solution is highly cost-effective compared to purchasing specialised window cleaning products too.

If you notice mould and dirt around the window edges, Maxine advises using a cream cleaner.
